Off-Road Trails in Monticello, New Mexico


The small town of Monticello, New Mexico is well situated with the off-road enthusiast. Located about 25 miles south of the larger capital of scotland - Truth or Consequences, Monticello is also near to Elephant Butte Lake State Park. Monticello is one thing of your ghost town, with buildings still standing by reviewing the birth as a spot to protect settlers from Apache attacks. The rugged desert, with its long trails and high temperatures, attracts outdoors enthusiasts and campers.


Monticello Canyon Trail
This 17-mile trail begins from the capital of scotland- Monticello and runs along the Alamosa River. This easy off-road trail climbs about 1,000 feet, and crosses back and forth above the river about 100 times, but typically in under a foot of water. There is personal estate on sides with the trail in places, so do not stray from the path because you can get trespassing. See Resource 1 for a map of Monticello Canyon Trail.

Caballo Lake Palomas Gap Trail
The Caballo Lake/Palomas Gap Trail begins about an hour's drive from Monticello, south of Truth or Consequences near Caballo Lake State Park. This moderately difficult trail is 25 miles long and will present more experienced riders with hearty but surmountable challenges. The trail climbs about 3,500 feet towards peak of Timber Mountain, then drops again in the number of switchbacks. There may be camping nearby on the state park, making the Caballo/Palomas trail your best option with an overnight trip from Monticello. See Resource 2 for any map of the Caballo/Palomas Trail.

Broad Canyon Trail
This difficult loop trail is south of Monticello and north of Las Cruces. Expect of a 90-minute drive the trailhead. The trail is renowned for the massive boulders that scatter the trail. Early on inside the trail you'll have to get over the "test rock." In case your vehicle can clear this stone, you will be fine the rest of the way. Nevertheless, be careful and carry a kit to produce any necessary repairs along the route. The loop is around 9 miles long total, but not take overtime with ledges and steep climbs to grapple with.
